The 88th winner of the St Leger, held on Wednesday 16th September 1863 over 1 mile 6 furlongs and 132 yards of Town Moor, was Lord Clifden, a bay colt by Newminster out of The Slave, owned by the 3rd Viscount St Vincent. A field of 19 runners contested the race, although there were 204 subscriptions of 25 sovereigns each, which was worth 5100 sovereigns. The value to the winner was £4,975.
